Maybe for your friend it's like a math problem? He'll have to try a few different things before he finds the solution that he understands.

I guess when I think about using the skill, I imagine that I'm falling into the headspace of an animal. The same way I get into the groove before a boxing match.

You must really like dogs though, Akihiko-kun. Especially to become one...

[ She's not sure she would describe any of her friends as dogs. Maybe Ryuji, in that fiercely loyal kind of way. Otherwise, many of her friends are kind of like cats... ]

I'm definitely more of a dog person than a cat one.

[ Don't let him fool you; he likes all animals. It's part of being a friend of Shinji's, and partly because Miki was fond of them as well. As painful as it is, he thinks of her whenever he greets a stray. ]

Dogs are simple, though. Not complicated for the most part. They're hunters, or runners, or herders, and they do what they do well when they train for it. They never doubt their roles.

I think I have always preferred cats.

[ Mona might be offended if anyone says he's a cat, but he would likely bristle at the idea they prefer dogs more. ]

Dogs are wonderful, but they do seem like a lot of work! We never had any growing up, or any kind of pet.

Koromaru is the closest thing I've ever had to a pet - and he's not really mine. He's technically the dorm's, but I'm pretty sure he likes Minato best, and Shinji and Ken probably make his top three.

[ He gets along well with Koromaru! He's just aware he's not the dog's absolute favorite. ]

Why didn't you have a pet at home? I didn't because we weren't allowed to have them in the orphanage. When I moved, between school, boxing, and cram classes I didn't have the time for one.

I was. Shinji was too; that's how we met. We got into a fight out in the yard over something I can't remember anymore.

I moved out towards the end of middle school into the school dorms at Gekkoukan, and Shinji came with me.

Are both your parents not around?

They're not. I'm not sure if Shinji remembers his, and mine - they passed away when I was three. I don't remember anything about them at this point. We must not have had any extended family.

I'm very sorry to hear.
That must be hard.

[ Even if he doesn't remember, it doesn't necessarily mean the grief does not exist. ]

Are you an orphan too?

I'm not sure if it's the right word, to be honest.
Father passed away last year, a few months before I graduated. I was already almost 18, so the circumstances aren't the same.

[ No, it isn't the same as growing up an orphan, but - ]

I think that still counts. Especially if you're not close to your extended family... you're alone in the world, and you don't have anyone at easy reach for advice.

I guess you are right. I don't have any other relatives; my grandfather passed a long time ago when I was still a child.
It was just Father and I until last year.
But it's okay. I have my friends now.

I'm glad to hear that.

Shinji was my oldest friend but - he's not my only one. Back home, I have plenty of people I consider like my family as well.

[ It's just that half of them aren't adults so you know. ]

I probably shouldn't say this, but I think you'd get along well with Mitsuru, if she showed up here.

Yes. Mitsuru Kirijo; she's my oldest friend after Shinji. She's been a persona user for a long time, and we were the first three to band together and fight the shadows.

You remind me a bit of her - your grace under pressure, and your determination.

A lot of people freeze under pressure; being able to keep moving forward is worth it.
